Driving Guide for Cyprus

Driving in Cyprus might be different from your home country. The most important factor to remember is that traffic flows on the left side of the road. If you are coming from the UK, this will not be a problem. For all drivers, that are accustomed to right hand traffic, need to be aware of this difference. The roads are in generally good condition, but the drivers are sometimes quite erratic. Be especially careful of people operating motor bikes because they have a common disregard for the rules of the road.

-Must be valid in the country of issuance
-Must be for a driver that is 18 years old or over

Almost every license from around the world is valid to drive in Cyprus. You should check with your country’s embassy in Cyprus to verify that your license is acceptable. It is always a good idea to have and international driving permit (IDP) if you are from a non-EU country.

Speed Limits

Urban roads (built up areas) - 50km/h
Rural roads (minor highways) - 80km/h
Major highways - 100km/h

The speed limit signs are always posted in kilometers per hour (km/h). The above table is a general guide and you should always adjust your speed if the sign requires. Many locals do not obey the posted limits and it will be tempting to drive fast. You need to resist the lure because if you are caught speeding, you will pay a fine.

-Everyone in the car must wear a safety belt
-Children under 5 may not sit in the front seat
-Children under 10 years old must be in the proper safety seat

It is very important that you are always on the lookout for imprudent drivers. Some of the people driving motorbikes do not follow the rules very closely and you need to be aware of their presence. The drinking and driving laws are different in each part of the country but as a general rule you need to be under .04% BAC.

The parking situations and prices are different throughout the country. In the big cities you will find that the parking prices are very cheap and the spaces are reasonably available. Make sure you leave your car in a legal position so you will not be given a ticket. All of the parking signs are written in English as well as Greek so you should not have a problem figuring them out. The hours of operation are clearly printed on the signs and usually end by 22:00. In the afternoon on Saturdays and all day Sundays, parking is free.
The prices for parking in public lots are usually more expensive than the street. There is some small added security when you park in a guarded lot, but generally street parking is safe.
